POTUS tweets some racist shit and creates a tornado of controversy. The House passes a symbolic resolution that

“strongly condemns President Donald Trump’s racist comments that have legitimized and increased fear and hatred of new Americans and people of color.”

The Senate will not take up the new legislation because it is Republican controlled. Republicans are white male Stepford wives of POTUS and don’t realize that

the fish rots from the head first

And new articles of impeachment focus on POTUS’s personal behavior are now introduced.

  • Leadership by chaos?
  • Cover for Acosta and Epstein sex scandal embarrassment?
  • Cover for lack of illegal immigrant round up?
  • Cover for attention on immigrant children held in ‘American Concentration Camps’?
  • Cover for the failure of the census citizenship question?

Media manipulation on a massive scale, sucking in all available oxygen, so other stories are drowned out.

It won’t work out in the long run. It will only leave a smoking trail of destruction with everyone licking wounds and a new generation of people who remembered that they impeached the MF.

Television has been a major source of information and influence on people in the US since the 1960’s. Think moon landing. That’s 60 years so far.

And now the ubiquity and widespread use of the internet and social media shows us that a change has taken place. The old TV is not the only game in town anymore.

The use of social media and it’s influence on people’s actions is real. People’s attention and emotions can be manipulated to click, laugh, click, buy, click, cry, click, yell, click, scream, click, swipe, click, eat, click, drink, click, text, click, vote, click, don’t vote, click, tap, tap.

We are often obsessive and compulsive. We are often extreme. Sometimes this can be good and productive. Sometimes not so good. It is hard to self reflect, recognize unhealthy extremes and self regulate. You can see it as addictions of every kind. It can be funny but it is really sad and destructive.

We need to find balance, a happy medium, have a good BS detector. It’s not easy in this modern Information Age. It all looks so shiny, uniform, orderly, official and authoritative. But sadly it’s people behind there with selfish agendas or less than positive motives. And now there may not even be people behind it. Bots and AI, artificial intelligence, computer programs now churn out content. Faster than humans and tuned to hit those emotional targets. We are like fish in a barrel. Easy targets for people with money and people with agendas. Be careful out there.

One’s life is a package of time. Some parts in the past. Some parts in the future. We might spend our time thinking about the past. We might spend our time thinking about the future. We might even spend time thinking about the present, the now. Compared to the past and future, the present is an impossibly thin, almost non-existence thing.

What is presence or mindfulness. Maybe our life is like a book, full of pages. Pages, lots of super thin pages, lots of ‘presents’? Being present is like opening that book and expanding time. Now is the open book. Now is what we see, smell, taste, listen to, talk about…think about. The pages in front of us.

Enjoy now while we have it. Before the book is closed and put on the shelf.

We Forget

Nice for us to forget Iran Air Flight 655. Some people will never forget. I don’t blame them.

Civilian Airbus A300 with 290 killed when shot down on June 3, 1988 by the United States Navy USS Vincennes Aegis guided middle cruiser while in Iranian territory. The US paid $213,103.45 per passenger, expressed quiet regret, never admitted fault or disciplined anyone. All but forgotten in the US.

In 2015 a nuclear deal with Iran to limit activity in exchange for sanctions relief worth billions of dollars was forged. A major accomplishment and break in hostility widely endorsed by major nuclear powers.

Look where we are today. Two tankers attacked, a drone shot down, enrichment restarted and no plan for the next move. No goal for a manufactured crisis. Another big mess to clean up?

A little humility and self reflection can temper a rigid angry march toward war. Old men talk and young when die in war. I hope we are past that and don’t forget.

Rocky Road Recipe

Melt one package of dark chocolate chips in a double boiler. The darker the better, I use a 65% cacao because it is more available from Ghiradelli. Float a stainless steel bowl in a pan high enough to prevent tipping. My bowl and pan are nine inches and the bowl cannot tip over, it sucks to get water in your chocolate. Remove from the water when melted.

Then measure out by the cup your favorite nut. I like a cup of almonds, a cup of walnuts and one package of mini marshmallows. Mix carefully and add more nuts by the handful while keeping everything coated.

I wrap a cookie sheet with plastic wrap. Dump it all on the cookie sheet and spread. Not trying to compact too much. This will make it easier to break apart when cool.

Put it in the fridge and enjoy after it’s all solid again. Transfer to a ziplock bag, keep it in the fridge and have a great, mostly healthy treat anytime. Or better yet share it!

How do know someone is doing Keto? You don’t, they tell you.

Keto is short for ketogenic. Ketogenic describes a diet and lifestyle that puts ones body into a state of ketosis. Ketosis is the human body producing ketones from stored body fat or dietary fat. Ketones are a secondary backup fuel source. Glucose, sugar, is the primary fuel for the brain and body.

The body is evolved to be super efficient. Important functions have backup in case primary functions fail. Less important functions disappear. Brain function is a priority and the brain can use glucose as fuel. But if blood glucose levels fall, the body can produce ketones and the brain is happy. We live and reproduce. Evolution dictated what we are today.

Keto fans are loud and proud. Other diet fads are generally quiet. People don’t talk about their choice of diet. Dieting primarily is for weight loss. Admitting to dieting is admitting to wanting change and not being happy. Not happy with the current state of our body and not happy about food restrictions. Diets imply limits to food, some foods are forbidden. Good, tasty, convenient and fun foods are off limits when one diets. Unhappy.

But Keto adherents are happy. Why? In my opinion, because it’s right. Evolution dictated that we must survive in times of famine. And thrive in times of plenty. Our bodies store fat easily and quickly. Think spring and summer. Our bodies can survive long periods without food. Think winter or drought.

Sugar and carbs are nice, our brains and tastebuds are hardwired to seek it out. But the natural world, not the present man made world, has few and far between sugar and carb sources. So we cooked and ate meat and fat. You are not a grass or grain eater.

So Keto has some science behind it. Other diets are based on short term weight loss, have simple rules and are not usually sustainable. Keto is sustainable. Fasting and fasted exercise can be a big part of Keto lifestyle. It feels good because we are built for it.

We are not built for constant feeding and constant rest. Modern life gives us those luxuries. But eat all the time and rest too much and your body won’t be happy and therefore you won’t be happy. You will get sick and no one is happy when they are sick.

So move, every day. Eat fat, every meal. Don’t have too many meals per day. Avoid sugar and carbs. Call me Keto Dee or Keto Dum, I don’t care. Just call me happy.

Live long and prosper

Spock was the Vulcan character from the Star Trek television show and movies as portrayed by actor Leonard Nimoy. Half human and half Vulcan, Spock chose a life following his Uber logical nerd like Vulcan heritage. But he never said goodbye or farewell, instead he gestured with a hand held up, palm outward and the four fingers splayed into a vee. He simultaneously wished long life and prosperity upon the other.
