Nike Vaporfly 4% and Next % carbon fiber plate equipped running shoes have made Marathon finish times faster in the last two years. Is this cheating? My opinion is that these are cheater shoes. And the people running in them are cheaters using a technology of foam and curved spring material. A very expensive $250 a pair performance enhancing devices. Nike purports to give a runner 4% more efficiency and therefore more speed.
Statistics show that elites and sub three hour finishers are more likely to be wearing these new cheater shoes than not. I might buy some myself. But I may not. My view on PED’s, drugs or shoes, are a definite “No” for me.
My marathon goals are to finish, have fun and do not get hurt. Running longevity is more important than speed. Quoting a one time PR is not as important as quoting my latest finish time. At my age.
More power to you cheaters. I hope the shoe makes you happy. I hope you get a PR. But those are cheater shoes on your feet. And that makes you kind of or definitely a cheater. Ha ha!
