In training and physical fitness there is are invisible lines. Lines once crossed and the cost benefit ratio flips from good to bad. Lines crossed and we mentally check out or enthusiasm drains. Lines crossed and growth becomes decay.

Lines are by definition and in theory are definite, distinct, measurable and infinitely thin. The lines I refer to are wide, fuzzy, indistinct and hard to measure. When does the cost outweigh the benefit of physical training? If the body can’t recover from the damage caused by training. If activity is hindered or altered for too long, that’s a clue that the line is near.

If the thought of training is hard to bear. Or if one has negative thoughts towards training the line is near. You can reduce duration, frequency or intensity to bring back enjoyment to training. Training should be uncomfortable and maybe even ugly and grueling. But if you can’t maintain it over time, then maybe you crossed the line.

Measurements like pace. Miles per week. Maximum repetitions. Finish times. These can all point to overtraining or under training. Hopefully one can sense the messages our body gives regarding health and fitness. And we don’t need the external measurements. But sometimes extra rest, breaks, special nutrition supplements or modified training can get us back onto a level or growth trajectory.

Training is like toast. Better to be a little undercooked than overcooked.
